Haowei (Harvey) Ruan

Harvey is now open to working for an academic job (lecturer/research fellow) in financial accounting and auditing.

Research Interests:

Haowei (Harvey) is a PhD job market candidate in accounting at the University of Queensland Business School in Australia, under the supervision of Professor Kathleen Herbohn and Professor Peter Clarkson. He is a current PhD student representative in the Accounting Discipline of UQ Business School. Prior to joining the PhD program in 2022, he was an auditor for KPMG China. Harvey is a chartered accountant (ACCA, full member since 2022) in the UK and received his Master of Commerce from the University of Queensland. Since 2022, he has been teaching various accounting courses for both undergraduate and postgraduate programs for more than 1,000 hours at the UQ Business School, including financial accounting courses at all levels (long experience), as well as auditing and assurance services (top-rated teaching).

Harvey’s research interests lie in the intersection of financial accounting, corporate governance, auditing and assurance and sustainability accounting. His primary focus is on information disclosure in the capital markets, especially voluntary disclosure and non-financial information, such as climate change and sustainability reporting, which is concerned with how capital market participants value and use non-financial disclosures and how disclosures inform stakeholders about corporate performance. In addition, Harvey’s research also encompasses governance and auditing issues related to corporate disclosures. He works on studying the role of governance mechanisms, auditing and assurance, and government regulation in corporate disclosure practices. Beyond the accounting research, Harvey is also interested in the disclosure issues in the sustainable supply chain, such as climate risks and emissions in the supply chain.

Harvey actively participated in doctoral training and international accounting doctoral symposiums and conferences. He was selected by Judge Business School of the University of Cambridge to participate in a global PhD course - Organising the Climate Transition. His research papers were accepted by the PhD consortium of the Illinois International Accounting Symposium 2024 and Nanyang Business School Accounting Conference 2024, the Accounting and Finance Association Australia and New Zealand (AFAANZ) Doctoral Symposium 2024, and the Early Career Colloquium of the Australasian Centre for Social and Environmental Accounting Research (A-CSEAR) Conference in 2023. Harvey is an ad hoc reviewer for the Australian Accounting Review, the AAA FARS Midyear Conference 2025 and the AFAANZ Conference 2025.

His PhD project is to investigate Australian firms’ climate change disclosures and their economic consequences.
