Haowei (Harvey) is a PhD candidate in accounting at the University of Queensland Business School in Australia, under the supervision of Professor Kathleen Herbohn and Professor Peter Clarkson. Prior to joining the PhD program in 2022, he was an auditor for KPMG China. Harvey is a chartered accountant (ACCA) in the UK and received his Master of Commerce from the University of Queensland. Since 2022, he has been teaching various accounting courses for both undergraduate and postgraduate programs at the UQ Business School, including financial accounting courses at all levels (long experience), as well as auditing and assurance services (top-rated teaching).
Harvey’s research interests lie in the intersection of financial accounting, corporate governance and sustainability accounting. His primary focus is on corporate social responsibility (CSR) in areas such as climate change and sustainability, which is concerned with how capital market participants value and use CSR disclosures and how disclosures inform stakeholders about corporate performance. In addition, Harvey’s research also encompasses governance issues related to corporate disclosures, including aspects such as disclosure transparency, credibility, and quality control. He works on studying managers’ behaviour and the role of different internal and external corporate governance mechanisms in ensuring effective disclosure practices. Beyond the accounting research, Harvey is also interested in the sustainable supply chain, such as climate risks and emissions in the supply chain.
Harvey actively participated in international accounting doctoral symposiums and conferences. His research papers were accepted by the PhD consortium of the Illinois International Accounting Symposium 2024 and Nanyang Business School Accounting Conference 2024, the Accounting and Finance Association Australia and New Zealand (AFAANZ) Doctoral Symposium 2024, and the Early Career Colloquium of the Australasian Centre for Social and Environmental Accounting Research (A-CSEAR) Conference in 2023. Harvey was also an ad hoc reviewer of the American Accounting Association (AAA) Financial Accounting and Reporting Section (FARS) Midyear Conference.
His PhD project is to investigate Australian firms’ climate change disclosures and their economic consequences.
